Military Structure
Colonel Robert Hammond's Regiment is based upon
the structure of a seventeenth century infantry regiment.
Each regiment is commanded by a Colonel with supporting field officers. Each company is commanded by a captain with lieutenants and Ensigns as their support staff. Below that comes Elder Sergeant and the other non-commissioned officers who control the movement of the individual soldiers under their command. The rank structure has to be maintained for control purposes, and we use the same system on the battlefield and in drill.
Don't kid yourself that this is anything other than a fully functioning military unit. Once we call 'Stand-to' you have agreed to join a seventeenth century infantry regiment, and we will expect you to recognise and follow the lawful commands of your officers. In return, the officers will do everything they can to make sure that you have a safe and enjoyable re-enactment. You will also be asked to attend drill and manouvre sessions to further your training and to hone your skills. We are not obsessed, but we like things done to a standard, and practice makes perfect.
Off the battlefield things are far more relaxed. We are always encouraging our members to get involved with the social side of the regiment, and to mix on a social level. Check out the role of the Executive Committee and each of its members to see what they have signed up for - maybe you would enjoy supporting one of those roles, and maybe stand for a position in the future?

Hammond's Officers have accrued over 150 years of service in the Regiment!
When you realise that we have that level of experience you can understand why you may not be able to walk in and take up one of these important roles.
There are two grades of Officers in the Regiment - Commissioned Officers, and Non-commissioned Officers. Those officers that hold a commission are The Commanding Officer, and the Pike and Musket Officers and the Regimental Ensign. The rest of the officer corps are non-commissioned officers. However, we all have the regiment's best interests at heart, and will all work tirelessly to achieve the very best for the regiment and its members.
We have a very democratic way of running the regiment, and everyone is encouraged to get involved in the organisation of the regiment and its activities. Be assured that everyone can become an officer with hard work, dedication and diligent service - that bit is down to you!
