Social Secretary
Elaine Hawgood
Gentleman of the Armes
The Social Secretary is a full member of the Executive Committee, and looks after the social welfare of all members of Hammond’s when on camp. Whether those members are youngsters looking for extra equipment or activities whilst on camp for the weekend; or adult members looking for a cocktail party at a muster, the role of the Social Secretary is to coordinate with other members of the Executive Committee, and the officers of the regiment to make these activities happen. The position is open to members of the Sealed Knot, Colonel Robert Hammond’s Regiment, and must be over 18 years of age, looking to support Hammonds in the following areas:
Certain events through the year will be classed as Red-coat events where we will all don our regimental red-coats and convene at a pre-arranged venue i.e. the beer tent, prior to an evening’s revelry. This will give a very visible display of Hammond’s presence, a good team building exercise with all members equalised through the wearing of regimental colours. Let’s get pride in the regiment, let everyone else see our pride and wish that they had our spirit and camaraderie.
The Social Secretary will publish a quarterly list of events that they are organising for publication in England’s Birthright, our regimental newsletter.
- The Social Secretary shall act as a facilitator of a planned social calendar of activities and events that has been presented to the Executive Committee and agreed therein. This has to be the case as often these events will involve the expenditure of Regimental Funds.
- All members of the Executive Committee and any willing member of the regiment may assist the Social Secretary, and arrangements for a programme of events shall be made at the beginning of the year to ensure that members of the regiment are aware of the activities planned. The Executive Committee will commit a budget at the beginning of the year for social activities within the regiment.
- The role of the Social Secretary shall be to collate ideas from the members of the regiment – especially those providing the important role of caring for children while the regiment is on the battlefield or on parade; and also ideas for other activities from all members of the regiment.
- Upon agreeing a social calendar at the Executive Committee, and agreeing a budget against each activity, the Social Secretary will publish via England’s Birthright our Regimental Magazine, a list for the year and any special requirements for each activity, and if possible the likely costs for each event, or other provisions that may need to be brought to the event. It may be that the regiment focuses any regimental funding to a single well sponsored event – i.e a Regimental Banquet; alternatively they may choose to support a number of smaller events instead.
- The role will develop over time, but the family spirit of Colonel Robert Hammond’s shall be at its core, ensuring that all members are catered for during their time away at a muster. Major musters where we have a large turnout of members should be the focus of activities and care should be taken to make a creative list of activities that can be enjoyed without regular repetition, and recognising the diverse interests of all members of the regiment.
